How to win playing Slot Machines

Slot Machine Playing Strategy

Slot machines have evolved into a mechanical – video entertainment combination which distracts players from the harsh reality that they are gambling.

When the player puts in money the music sounds – the “action movie background plays’ – images flash – the bells and whistles sound – the chairs actually vibrate. Players are enticed into playing again and again.

If you watch at any casino you can see every type of impulsive-compulsive obsessive and desperate behaviour on exhibition. It is no wonder that casinos create billions in profits every year for the owners.

For the part time casino adventurers – there is a real math based reality to all the action. The casinos either by law or design set the slot payout odds.

You can calculate your odds of winning the various prize amounts at the slot machines and play to minimize losses and maximize your winning opportunities.

How to Win Playing the Slot Machines

The first function is to look at the prizes being offered at the slot machine. If there is one grand prize of 3 or 5 symbols across the columns – then you can calculate the odds.

Lets say that each reel or column contains one grand prize symbol. Some of the older slot machines contain 22 symbols – some of the new ones contain 256 symbols. For the older 5 reel machines the odds of winning the grand prize is: 22 times 22 times 22 times 22 times 22 equals one chance in 5,153,632. For the newer machines 256 times 5 times equals only one chance in over 142 billion combinations. Just for comparisons this means it is 1000 times easier to win any lottery grand prize than the grand prize of any new casino slot machine.

As a playing strategy I usually ignore the extra bonus bets or play max lines to trigger bonus playing. This is a guaranteed method to lose almost every time you play.

The non-grand-prize symbols make up the rest of the 21 to 255 symbols on the slot reels or columns. There can be 5 or 6 of the same symbols on the reels which means that every 9 to 25 plays you will win a small prize.

If the machine wins every 9 plays and the minimum pay is 10 credits – play the machine all day – you will just keep winning. If the machine wins every 14 plays and pays a minimum of 15 credits – again you will just keep winning small prizes all day long.

How to rate your slot machine

You need to know the total number of symbols on each reel – then what the number of each symbol is on each reel.

So if half the symbols are “X” on reel 1 then you have a 1 in 2 chance of getting this symbol. If the symbol is one third of reel 2 then you have a 1 in 3 chance. ( for example lets say the same 1 out of 3 for reel three – to calculate for the odds you have a 2 times 3 times 3 chance of winning which equal about 1 every 18 plays).

We will use this same math example – With slot machines you have different symbols and some “wild” symbols which help your odds of winning. When you calculate the odds of winning with each symbol it will be a 1 in something ( for example 200 chance of getting a minimum of 3 symbols in a row).  You have to add up all the chances to win with the different symbols –  then you can say you will have a total of (for example) 15 in 200 chances to win something. What this means is that every 200 chances divided by 15 different symbols wins each 13.3 plays – you will on average win something.

If your number of average spins to win is below the minimum prize amount – you will win all day long. (for example if it takes 13.3 spins to win a minimum of 15 credits – this is a winning machine – if your machine takes on average 13,3 spins to win and the most common prize is 5 credits – then you will lose all your money all day long – every day you play this machine.

The casino staff can change the ratio of symbols on the machines. The machines can go from hot to stone cold by just removing a few strategic symbols on the first or second reels. The staff can change these ratios so that some or all machines pay a set ratio or will pay out on a average.
